Hold onto your bubbles, a champagne shortage is on the way

We don't mean to burst your bubble, but champagne production is down thanks to the pandemic, bad weather and other annoying things.

Lockdowns, restrictions, El Niña and Omicron…as if 2021 hasn’t already been difficult enough, it now seems we’re facing a champagne shortage.

Thanks to the chaos COVID-19 has unleashed on global alcohol supply chains, as well as volatile weather for growers and skyrocketing transportation costs, champagne production has dropped.

As a result, local bottle shop chains have restricted sales of famous champagne brands such as Pol Roger, Mumm and Möet, with Dan Murphy’s putting in place a limit of 12 bottles per person.

But don’t let that burst your bubble just yet.

Your festive season events can still sparkle with enough fizz as there is plenty of Aussie bubbly to go around, and we’re all for supporting local as much as possible.

But, if you’re a sparkling-snob that insists only French will do, you’re still in luck – it might just mean being open to trying brands other than your favourite.
