Indonesia to remove visa requirements for Australians

The Indonesian Government is weighing up a proposal to remove visa requirements to travellers from Australia as part of an initiative to encourage more visitors to the South East Asian country.

The visa waiver would be part of a broader plan to offer visa-free entry to nationals of 20 countries, including Australia, US, China, India, South Korea, Germany, UK and France.

Currently, Australians visiting Indonesia don’t require a visa if staying for less than 30 days, however this can’t be extended. For stays longer than 30 days, a Visa on Arrival is needed.

Indonesian Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno said the government is considering the visa waiver to boost the nation’s economy, tourism and investment.

The initiative is one of many being proposed or implemented by nations worldwide in 2024 in an effort of restore visitor numbers post-COVID-19.

Countries such as Kenya, Greece, China, Malaysia, Russia, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Thailand and Nepal are all trialling visa waivers for visitors from select countries to stimulate their economies.
