Perth Convention Bureau chairman Ian Laurance’s long and distinguished career in the tourism industry in both Western Australia and Queensland has been recognised with a national lifetime achievement award.

Ian Laurance has received the Outstanding Contribution by an Individual award at the Qantas 2010 Australian Tourism Awards held in Perth on March 11.

Formerly the Western Australian Minister for Tourism in the early 1980s, he said he was delighted and honoured to receive the award.

“It is always nice to be recognised by your industry peers,” he said. “I have derived great enjoyment and pleasure from my involvement in the tourism industry, so to receive this award is a wonderful bonus.

“And I am very much enjoying my continuing association with the industry through my role as Chairman of the Perth Convention Bureau board.
“Business tourism is a dynamic sector of the industry with enormous potential for growth and I am keen to raise its, and the Bureau’s, profile within Government and the wider corporate community.”

Apart from his Ministerial portfolio, Laurance’s career in tourism spans almost four decades and includes significant involvement with Seaworld and Warners Bros Movie World in Queensland, as well as being the inaugural chairman of Australia’s North West Tourism.

He also a former vice president of Tourism Council of Western Australia and in 2006 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to the tourism industry.
