Flagstaff Gardens Melbourne general manager, Steve Finlayson, said in tough times it paid to be proactive.

“We are spending more on advertising and marketing on our meetings, conferences and banqueting and we are doubling our C&E team to ensure we increase share of the available market,” he said. “And we are improving the quality of our offerings to clients.”

“We’re not sitting back and cutting costs everywhere. We’re sticking firmly to our management and service strategy while at the same time being progressive in the market, which we believe should protect us to some degree from the economic downturn.”

Finlayson has also added an extra person to the hotel’s sales team and is focusing on staff retention to maintain a high quality of service in the hotel.
