Event students make biggest vertical charity race possible

Event management students from various institutes across Melbourne will arrive bright and early at Eureka Tower for the biggest vertical race in the Southern Hemisphere, Eureka Climb 2012

Event management students from various institutes across Melbourne will arrive bright and early (5.30am) at Eureka Tower for the biggest vertical race in the Southern Hemisphere, Eureka Climb 2012  which takes place on 18 November, 2012.

Student volunteers have teamed up to assist this unique charity event and gain hands-on experience in their field of study.

These motivated students are giving up their valuable time for the unique charity event as an opportunity to participate actively within their chosen career field.

I Need Helpers, a volunteer management organisation, have been provided with the task of carefully selecting the lucky 24 motivated students from their career-motivated database, to which, well over 600 event management students have signed up.

This figure is increasing daily with educational institutes endorsing the career benefits that volunteering has. The concept of linking students with industry provides event organisers with dedicated, enthusiastic and career-minded individuals while assisting students in their current courses.

The media frenzied event will help provide students with direct educational benefits including valuable hands-on experience and networking opportunities with thekey event stakeholders on the day.

Opportunities like this provide some light for students who have recently been impacted by the $300 million TAFE budget cuts to the education sector. I Need Helpers, who have been involved with a number of large-scale events like St Kilda Festival and the Financial Education Summit ft. Sir Richard Branson held in Melbourne see the importance that practical experience plays for our committed students.

“This opportunity provides an amazing platform for the students involved. I know that the experiences and challenges students are presented whilst volunteering will be applied in their current event courses,“ said Alex Rixon-Booth, director of I Need Helpers

The event management ‘helpers’ will assist with the event registration desks, water stations, Level 88 finish-line and will be positioned on the rooftop ushering participants.

This is the only time that Eureka Tower staff allow guests on the actual rooftop of the building, such a rewarding view for those who are volunteering their valuable time.

“When volunteering for I Need Helpers I felt like I was part of a family. It was educating, hard work but a lot of fun. I Need Helpers gave me the opportunity to work for major events which otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to be a part of,” said Asanki Fernando, event management student at Victoria University.

With the organisation is expanding rapidly, it has introduced a number of other event services that focus on supporting rapidly growing events industry, while at the same time allowing students gain invaluable experiences. The organisation has recently opened doors for students studying in fields cof marketing, design, photography and public relations.
