Melbourne braces for 50,000 convention delegates

The delegation will be spread across almost 200 properties in Melbourne.

Melbourne and regional Victoria will welcome 50,000 delegates from around the world this week for The International Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses 2019.

The huge delegation will gather at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium from 22-24 November, filling the sports and entertainment precinct to capacity.

Close to 6000 hotel rooms across 199 properties in Melbourne CBD and metro areas will be occupied by the delegates, translating into 35,000 room nights for the state’s economy.

The program will also incorporate one week of touring programs around regional Victoria, dispersing 12,400 delegates into Victoria’s most popular regions.

The $60.9 million event was secured by Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) with support from the Victorian State Government, City of Melbourne and industry suppliers.

MCB CEO Julia Swanson said Melbourne’s collaborative approach and strong relationships with accommodation partners helped secure the event.

“Pre- and post-conference regional touring options within Victoria were also a significant draw card for this event,” she said.

“There is an abundance of experiences available all within a short drive from the city centre, from coastal attractions, wine and dine experiences to nature and adventure-based activities.”
