Pooches and their carers by the thousands raised much needed funds on Sunday (May 17) at the RSPCA’s annual Million Paws Walk at more than 70 locations across the country,
Twelve walks were held in NSW with the state’s main event taking place at The Overflow in Sydney Olympic Park and hosted by television personality Mike Goldman.

“Every year the Million Paws Walk is a huge hit with animal lovers in Sydney,” said RSPCA NSW Chief executive, Steve Coleman.

“The walk is a fun day out for pets and their owners while raising awareness of responsible pet ownership at the same time.”

The Olympic Park event featured entertainment, live music, dog shows judged by musician Axel Whitehead, product displays and food stalls, free health checks for pets, mobile dog washes and a raffle to win a Hyundai.
In NSW alone, $34 million is required to maintain the services of the RSPCA, with the government providing less than 2 per cent of the funding. The Millon Paws Walk is the organisation’s major fundraising event of the year.

“We rescued our dog Dax from the RSPCA about three years ago,” walk participant Caroline Beine told SpiceNews. “My son and I do the walk every year. It’s a great day out for families and we’re happy to help them raise money.”
While numbers are yet to be confirmed for this year’s event, 2008 saw approximately 60,000 people and 25,000 animals taking part in every state and territory across the country.
