Famous Sydney icecream parlour Gelato Messina has partnered with the Art Gallery of New South Wales to release a special pop-art inspired flavour, Candy Warhol, to celebrate the opening of the major summer exhibition, Pop to popism.

Exclusive to Sydney this summer, Pop to popism is the most comprehensive collection of pop art ever to be seen in Australia, featuring 200 works by more than 70 of pop’s greatest artists.

Messina’s creative department invented the new Candy Warhol flavour – a play on words inspired by pop art icon Andy Warhol – to give Sydneysiders a taste of Pop to popism, which is showing for four months over summer until 1 March 2015.

Gelato Messina general assistant Diego Vidal said, “The Candy Warhol flavour was inspired by a love of colour and popular culture. The flavours and colours of the gelato are meant to inspire a sense of child-like nostalgia, while the tin is an allusion to the most obvious tool in an artist’s arsenal.

“The flavour of Candy Warhol is a delicious mix of vanilla gelato and creaming soda sorbet, with raspberry jellies, passionfruit meringue and violet crystals, ” said Vidal.

Available for a limited time, Candy Warhol will be on sale at Gelato Messina in Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Bondi, Paramatta and The Star, Pyrmont from Wednesday, 12 November until Wednesday, 19 November.

Part of the Sydney International Art Series, Pop to popism will take over an entire floor and is one of the most ambitious exhibitions undertaken by the Gallery. For the very first time, Australian pop artists will be presented alongside their international peers from America, Britain and Europe.

Featured artists include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Jeff Koons, Brett Whiteley, Richard Hamilton, Martin Sharp, Gilbert and George, Cindy Sherman, Martha Rosler, Ed Ruscha, Peter Blake, Richard Larter, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Maria Kozic.

The Sydney International Art Series is a signature event on the Sydney and NSW Events Calendar, bringing the world’s most outstanding exhibitions to Australia, exclusively to Sydney, every summer.
