Beach Polo to debut in Broome

Australia's first ever beach polo event is set to be staged at Cable Beach in Broome on Sunday May 23.

Australia’s first ever beach polo event is set to be staged at Cable Beach in Broome on Sunday May 23, 2010.

Paspaley Beach Polo 2010 will see Australia’s top professional polo players competing for the Paspaley Cup against the spectacular backdrop of Australia’s Kimberley coast.

The event is the initiative of Marilynne Paspaley AM, founder of Pinctada Hotels and Resorts, and Janek Gazecki of Polo Enterprises Australia who launched Australia’s Polo in the City series.

Gazecki said Paspaley Beach Polo heralds an exciting new era for Australian polo as iconic Cable Beach joins only a handful of exotic locations around the world to host beach polo – Miami in the USA, Poole in the UK, Dubai in the UAE and Goa in India.

“Beach polo tournaments are rare because they require a specific mix of sand consistency, tidal considerations and beach gradient – Cable Beach has it all, along with sweeping sands, turquoise waters and the distinctive red pindan earth of the Kimberley,” he said.

“It’s the perfect location to stage this unique sporting spectacle, which will see our top polo players, headed by Australian captain Glen Gilmore, in action on the Kimberley sand.”

The event is free for the general public to enjoy from the sand dunes of Cable Beach while major sponsor Pinctada Hotels and Resorts together with naming rights sponsor Paspaley will host a VIP marquee on the sand.

“We are delighted to be presenting the inaugural Paspaley Beach Polo in Broome, one of the most exciting new events not only for the north of Australia but for Australia as a whole,” said Paspaley Executive Director James Paspaley.

“We have great associations with the Polo in the City series and it is a thrilling development to now bring Polo to the beach and the home of Paspaley and pearls.”

Pinctada Cable Beach, Broome’s new award-winning 5-star spa resort and the flagship of Pinctada Hotels and Resorts, is the official hotel for the event.

“We are delighted to announce Pinctada Cable Beach as the official hotel for Paspaley Beach Polo and are looking forward to hosting Australia’s leading polo players and our guests at a range of exciting events to be held in conjunction with the tournament,” Marilynne Paspaley said.

“We applaud Broome Shire Council for their vision in embracing this event and believe it has the potential to become one of the major events on Australia’s tourism calendar.”
