Pier Pavilion is positioned as a central gathering space for community events, performances and everyday moments of connection.
The NSW Government says the space “exemplifies its vision for accessible, inclusive public spaces that support social and cultural life in the city”.
The pavilion’s design by architects Besley and Spresser is a tribute to the area’s land, sky and sea, and was chosen from 170 entries from a national design competition in 2020.
Pier Pavilion blends form and function with sustainable design elements that reflect the character of Sydney’s coastline.
Key features include 85 sculptural columns reaching more than 7m in height; more than 450,000 recycled Sydney rock oyster shells used in custom terrazzo cladding; landscaped green roof planted with approximately 2500 native species; a 7m roof oculus, framing views of the sky; and an 18-metre double-sided seating area.
