Tourism NT and NT Major Events Company will merge to form Tourism and Events NT from 1 January 2026.
Tourism NT is a government agency and NT Major Events Company is government owned with a private enterprise model.
According to the Northern Territory Government, “the move cements a bold vision to grow a thriving, year-round visitor economy” for the region.
“We know our incredible event portfolio plays a huge role in bringing visitors, who then go on to experience the thrill of big skies and the quiet of ancient places in the tropical Top End and the iconic Red Centre,” says Suzana Bishop, CEO, NT Department of Tourism and Hospitality.
“Our two organisations already work extremely closely together so integrating them makes perfect sense and will create a powerhouse of creativity and strategy when it comes to promoting the Territory.”
Northern Territory industry leaders welcome the move.
“It’s a natural fit for Tourism NT and NT Major Events Company to come together under the new banner of Tourism and Events NT,” says Alicia Triggs, executive general manager sales and partnerships, Journey Beyond.
“At Journey Beyond, we have proudly partnered with both teams for many years.
“Tourism and events are intrinsically linked – each one strengthens the other, creating a strong driver for visitation.
“We’ve long valued the support of Tourism NT in promoting our iconic and immersive experiences across the Territory, from The Ghan and Outback Spirit Tours to Darwin Harbour Cruises, Alice Springs Telegraph Station, and our network of remote camps and lodges.
“We’re excited to continue our strong partnership with Tourism and Events NT to showcase a must-visit destination, both nationally and globally.”
AAT Kings Group CEO Ben Hall says events and tourism are natural partners for the Northern Territory.
“We have seen tourism and events combine and grow this sector in many other Australian states in recent years so this initiative is a sensible one for the Northern Territory, creating better synergies and wider reach for all to benefit from,” he says.
“The merger will help draw more people to NT and encourage them to stay longer and experience more.”
An expression of interest process for Tourism and Events NT Advisory Board appointments has commenced and will close on 22 October 2025.
The current Tourism NT board will support the transition until 31 December 2025.
