Delta Air Lines is set to begin daily non-stop Los Angeles to Sydney flights on July 1, 2009 in a move that is set to dramatically increase competition on the lucrative trans-Pacific route.

Delta will fly Boeing 777-200LR aircraft to Sydney

The United States carrier’s announcement came just two days after Virgin Blue’s V Australia announced a new launch date of February 27. The two airlines combined will add over 600 seats in each direction every day to the 15-hour route.

“Delta’s strategy of expanding our reach to select destinations while demonstrating capacity discipline in light of tough worldwide economic conditions continues to work and is paying off for our customers,” said Delta’s executive vice president, network planning and revenue management, Glen Hauenstein.

“Los Angeles is a critical gateway in our global network and today’s announcement gives us the ability to support demand for air travel in key global economies.”

Additionally, the Sydney flights will start and end in Atlanta, giving Australians easy access to a gateway key city in the Southeast of the United States.

Delta’s flights will be operated by the ultra-long range Boeing 777-200LR aircraft and will feature the airline’s award-winning BusinessElite class, which features fully horizontal personal sleeper suites and the Delta on Demand entertainment system.

Flight DL 16 will leave Sydney at 9:15 am and arrive at 6:00 am in the Los Angeles the same day, while DL 17 will leave Los Angeles at 10:40 pm and arrive in Sydney at 6:40 am two days later.

With the launch of Sydney flights, Delta becomes the third major U.S. carrier to fly to Australia alongside United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.
