Intrepid Travel acquires Tasmanian resort

Intrepid Travel is expanding its accommodation reach by acquiring a Tasmanian resort at Coles Bay.

The company has taken over the 20-room Edge of the Bay resort on Tasmania’s Freycinet Peninsula, which sits on 18 acres of land with views across Wineglass Bay.

The property was established in 1980 by Ray and Jill Johnston and the family has operated it for 45 years.

Intrepid Travel will embed its Intrepid Foundation partner Greening Australia at the property, including through new nature-based guest experiences.

Intrepid’s new accommodation strategy aims to create a portfolio of boutique accommodation experiences that have community and impact at their core.

Edge of the Bay resort will be responsibly operated, and the acquisition takes Intrepid’s accommodation offerings to four properties worldwide, including Daintree Ecolodge in Tropical North Queensland, which it took over in 2023.

The company has plans to grow to 20 properties worldwide in the next three years.

“Our approach to accommodation is underpinned by a commitment to preserving culture, fostering connection, supporting communities and boosting travel’s economic contribution within the local community,” says James Thornton, CEO, Intrepid Travel.

Intrepid Travel’s general manager, accommodation, Celine Hurelle, says the company’s growth is designed to offer guests immersive experiences.

“At the heart of this strategy is Intrepid’s accommodation philosophy: To offer an immersive stay that acts as a gateway to explore the destination and connect meaningfully to its community, culture and environment, while providing a comfortable base to relax,” she says.
