Central Pier launches petition in wake of closure

Atlantic Group is calling for community support following the Pier's abrupt closure.

Following the closure of Melbourne’s Central Pier, Atlantic Group has launched a petition to garner support for the venue.

The action comes after Central Pier’s event and hospitality venues were evacuated on 28 August when engineers raised concerns about the safety of the century-old structure.

According to Atlantic Group, the sudden closure of the venues has had a “devastating social and economic ripple effect” on the community and has put 1300 jobs at risk.

Eight businesses have been affected, including major event venue Peninsula Docklands. One of the venues, The Woolshed, recently announced it will cease business as a result of the Pier’s closure.

The petition is calling on Development Victoria to be held accountable for “failing to maintain and preserve an invaluable century-old piece of Melbourne’s history”.

Atlantic Group is also seeking support for the workers and businesses who have been affected by the issue.
