New theatre opens in former Darlinghurst Baptist church

Darlinghurst Theatre Company is preparing to move into its new home, a 126 year old heritage listed building that is currently being restored and renovated by the City of Sydney into a state-of-the-art theatre and event space on the corner of Burton and Palmer St.

The former Burton St Tabernacle was named in honour of Sydney identity Arthur Stace aka ‘Mr Eternity’. It was at this church that Stace heard the sermon that inspired him to anonymously chalk ‘Eternity’ on the city’s footpaths for over 30 years.

Darlinghurst Theatre Company has worked closely with the City of Sydney and architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer to create a technically advanced theatre that is welcoming, accessible and intimate. The theatre seats 200, the bar holds 50 standing up and in-house catering will be available over the coming months. The theatre is available for hire from November 1.
