Perth wins World Wide Web conference for 2017

Tim-Berners-Lee

Perth is set to welcome Sir Tim Bernes-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW) in May 2017.

Bernes-Lee will join 1000 international key influencers, decision makers, technologists, businesses and standards bodies who will present their ongoing work, research and opinions on the future direction of the WWW during this five day academic conference.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee is a British computer scientist, who is known for proposing an information management system in March 1989 and implementing the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the internet 25 years ago.  Berners-Lee is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees the Web’s continued development. In 2004, Sir Tim Berners-Lee was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his pioneering work

The idea of hosting this conference was introduced during Perth Convention Bureaus (PCB’s) annual Aspire Scholarship program in 2011, initially lead by Rick Barrett (Curtin) and supported by Sue Stepatschuk (PCB).

PCB’s director of  marketing Sue Stepatschuk said, “Perth’s successful bid was the result of years of joint intellectual efforts, negotiations and networking involving all of the WWW2017 Perth Bid Committee along with academics from the WA universities, and industry supporters.”
