China Restricts Business Travel

By Ian Neubauer

Chinese authorities are restricting business travel in the lead up to the Olympic Games to ward off foreign activists and ensure a trouble-free games.

Authorities in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities hosting Olympic events have stopped issuing invitation letters needed for business visas until late September, when the games and paralympics games wrap up.

The restriction applies to general business matters, such as conferences, visiting factories and negotiations. It does not apply to matters involving employment or contracts, AP reported.

New regulations have also come into effect requiring travelers to provide proof of flight and hotel bookings prior to visa applications. Business travelers must also now explicitly request a multiple entry business visa if required.

The policy is expected to cause problems for companies manufacturing and sourcing in China.

Travel to Hong Kong will not be effected by the restrictions.
