Sydney conference centre to close for refurbishment

One of Sydney's premier event venues is closing in December to undergo a major transformation.

The Sydney Masonic Centre (SMC) Conference & Function Centre will close its doors in December to undergo major refurbishment works that will result in more event spaces and increased delegate capacities.

The conference centre’s multi-million dollar renovation marks the single biggest investment in its 40-year history.

“As Sydney’s original purpose-built conferencing venue, the transformation will ensure that SMC remains at the forefront of the business events sector and retains its place as a landmark building amongst Sydney’s cityscape,” said general manager Paul Davison.

“Interior styles and palettes have been carefully designed to blend harmoniously with the Brutalist architecture of the original building while adding to the sophistication and grandeur of its monumental interiors.”

When SMC reopens in May 2019, it will feature two new flexible event spaces on level four, capable of hosting 140 guests each.

The adjoining meeting rooms and break-out areas will be refurbished, while leading audio-visual equipment and dedicated catering facilities will be added to offer clients a contemporary conferencing solution.

SMC will also install environmentally friendly air-conditioning and building management systems allowing each room to be independently controlled, saving energy and reducing waste.

Other new features include new digital way-finder and digital concierge to offer in-house support to event managers.

Architectural solutions group Incorp are behind the redesign, which will bring the mid-20th century Brutalist-style building into a 21st century style with timber textures and geometric wall panelling.

SMC will close on 17 December 2018 and is scheduled to reopen in May 2019. The SMC sales and event teams are available during the closure to help with new enquiries and confirmed bookings.
