The 50th Anniversary of the world’s most iconic space traveller, Doctor Who, was celebrated by legions of costumed fans and festivalgoers, on Saturday (1 June) when a special 3D-mapped projection of the BBC TV program screened on the grand façade of Customs House at Circular Quay, as part of this year’s Vivid Sydney.

The projection showcased an amazing visual feast of colour, light and movement as Doctor Who travels through space and time, pursued by some of his greatest enemies.

Industry supplier, Technical Direction Company (TDC), delivered 3D mapped projections for the celebration.

The team has been busy over the last few weeks delivering a number of projections at iconic Sydney venues across the city.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with some of the worlds most innovative creative artists and agencies, delivering stunning building projections,” said Kain Jones TDC’s special projects manager.

Working closely with the team from Spinifex, TDC brought the vision to life for the second year for Vivid.

TDC has supplied over 40 high brightness Barco digital video projectors incorporating 10 of  Barco’s latest 26,000 lumen HD
projectors, in addition to Barco 22k and 20k projectors along with all control and media server equipment.

“TDC is very proud to have played a party in this major event,” said Olin Winton, TDC’s technical manager. “Working along Sydney’s harbour front set us some unique challenges, and our crew has risen to the occasion, providing leading edge solutions to some tricky sites. The extremely positive reaction to our work is fantiastic.”

In addition, TDC supplied LED and projections solutions for the We See Saw installation, Empire of the Sun, and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu at the Sydney Opera House.

The Doctor Who projections were displayed at six intervals throughout the evening of Saturday June 1, featuring music from the TV show including I am the Doctor. The first Doctor was shown at 6.50pm, then 10 minutes to every hour, until midnight.

The Doctor Who projections were interspersed with Vivid Sydney festival hit Move Your Building, an interactive projection produced by French design company Danny Rose.

For those who aren’t able to make it to Customs House, a special pre-recorded webcast of the Doctor Who projection is available to watch by clicking here until the end of the festival on June 10.

Destination NSW  collaborated with BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand to create the evening of entertainment which also includes a special cinema screening featuring two episodes from Series Seven at Dendy Opera Quays, Dendy Newtown and Event Cinema on George Street.

Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase, said, “It’s very exciting to be bringing Doctor Who fans this spectacular projection on the glorious Customs House. I’m sure people of all ages will be enthralled as The Doctor tackles his foes in 3D. Vivid Sydney has expanded significantly this year, and this collaboration is a fantastic example of how we are bringing more exciting experiences to Vivid festivalgoers.”
