NCC ‘Passes the Baton’ at a special event

A special ‘Pass the Baton’ evening event was a gala occasion held in Caberra’s National Convention Centre, attended by government, business, and industry friends and colleagues of Cindy Young and Stephen Wood to honor Young’s 20 years of service and Wood’s return to Canberra.

In addition to keynote addressed by Cindy and Stephen, speeches were delivered by Andrew Barr, Deputy Chief Minister of the ACT, and long-term friend associate of the centre, Paul Donohue, a director at BDW Special Events Management.

Young, who has over 20 years’ experience in the industry, was the manager of the centre since its refurbishment in 2007. She was most recently an Associate Fellow of Meetings and Events Australia and is on the advisory councils for the Canberra Institute of Technology and BLITS Disability Board – a position she will retain after her retirement.

During her tenure at the NCCC, she has been awarded many notable honours including a 2011 Qantas Australian Tourism Award and more recently, a CIT Honoured Friend Award in 2012.

During her address, Young remarked she had mixed emotions about retiring but believed the centre would be left in “very safe, capable hands”.

Stepping into the role is Stephen Wood, who spent 12 years at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre and was most recently the director of operations there. An active member of the events industry, Wood was the proud recipient of the ‘Best Venue Team’ award granted by the Exhibition & Events Association of Australia.

A proud Canberran, Wood is returning to the nation’s capital with his family.

Singer/song writer Prinnie Stevens also provided entertainment on the evening and guests dined on a mixture of hot, cold and sweet canapés.

He is also excited to take over the reign in helping the centre continue its foundational role working with the local community and “giving back” via community events such as the centre’s VIP/Royalty Concerts which raise money for the local Yellow Van and RSPCA charities.

Notable event attendees included members of local government representatives, Canberra Institute of Technology representatives, Australian Capital Tourism representatives, local hoteliers, local media and national/regional representatives from IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) – which manages the centre.
