William Angliss Institute to skill indigenous tourism workforce

Specialist tourism and hospitality training centre William Angliss Institute will deliver a skilled indiginous workforce to Ayres Rock Resort through new funding supporting the Indigenous Land Corporation’s (ILC) National Indigenous Training Academy.

At the Pacific Asia Indigenous Tourism Conference on 29 March, the Minister for Tourism, the Hon Martin Ferguson AM MP announced the Institute as the successful recipient of a million dollar Strategic Tourism Investment Grant for the training project that offers pathways for indigenous people into sustainable employment.

“This grant recognises the significance of the impact our indigenous training programs have on economic and tourism development, which support the Institute’s commitment to community engagement and passion for tourism and hospitality,” said Nicholas Hunt, CEO William Angliss Institute.

Established in 1940, the Institute has a long history of community support and recently received the Service Skills Australia Excellence Award for Industry Collaboration for its indigenous training programs.

Through the National Indigenous Training Academy at Ayres Rock Resort, the Institute will deliver nationally accredited training in tourism and hospitality, along with business skills tailored to employment outcomes.

The Institute’s ability to customise training to meet individual business needs provides trainees with “in the workplace” experience as well as transferable skills and career development pathways.

Indigenous training at Ayres Rock Resort will include fundamentals in customer service, health and safety, business and marketing. Trainees will also benefit from mentors with hands on business experience who will help guide their development.

“William Angliss Institute shares Ayres Rock Resort’s commitment to best practices in indigenous tourism and is proud to continue our collaboration with the ILC, skilling individuals for the tourism and hospitality industries, “ continued Hunt.
