Sofitel Sydney celebrates Biennale with Artist in Residence event

[Wed 04/07/2012 01:32:09]

In celebration of the start of the Biennale of Sydney event, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has welcomed its first Artist in Residence to the hotel, at an event held last Thursday.

Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is the official accommodation partner with the 18th Biennale of Sydney, an international festival of contemporary art.

The Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has welcomed its first Artist in Residence in celebration of the Biennale of Sydney.

The hotel invited André Hemer to transfer his impressions of hotel life to glass on the hotel’s monumental Philip Street facing windows (opposite Chifley Square) in the city’s bustling CBD.

The dramatic art installation is featured on the glass façade of the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth with hot pink brush marks, inspiring guests and other artists staying throughout Sydney’s 18th Biennale.

At just 31 years of age, André Hemer is an already renowned artist who has exhibited in New Zealand, Korea, Taiwan and the UK. Based between Australia, New Zealand and Germany, Hemer completed his Masters in Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in early 2006, before undertaking a six-month residency at the Royal College of Art in London.

The installation is featured on the glass facade of the hotel in the Sydney CBD.

In addition to Hemer and this new artist in residence programme, the iconic hotel known by many as the ‘Wentworth’ hotel has long-term partnerships in place with over 10 different arts partnerships including the Art Gallery of NSW.

The hotel’s general manager Ian Alexandre says, “Sofitel Luxury Hotels has its origins in France, the home of both fine living and fine art, so all art – be it performance, visual, abstract or more traditional expressions - is a natural alignment for us.

“We intend to be taken seriously as Sydney’s Hotel for the Art, investing in leading arts partnerships as well as our own visiting artist program to demonstrate our commitment to the broader arts community. It’s our way of leveraging these important creative partnerships to bring the arts experience to life within the hotel and enhance the pleasure and overall experience for our guests and visitors.”

L-R: Global Arts Projects director Donald Williams and the artist, Andre Hemer.

Hemer’s striking pink themed installation and digital exhibition titled ‘things to do with paint that won’t dry’ is on free public display throughout the Biennale, until the 28th of August.

To further celebrate the Biennale, Sofitel is offering a hot pink themed high tea until the end of August and complimentary canapés served with the purchase of a selection of hot pink themed cocktails in the hotel’s lobby bar.
