Skycity Darwin $40M expansion at halfway mark

[Thu 08/12/2011 10:15:44]

Construction on Skycity Darwin’s $40 million Lagoon Resort reached a major milestone with construction hitting the halfway mark.

The placement of a 20 metre bridge over the landmark lagoon signals construction for the resort is on track for a dry season opening in mid July
2012. On hand to mark the occasion was Deputy Chief Minister Delia Lawrie MLA and Skycity Entertainment Group chief executive officer, Nigel Morrison.

Construction on the Skycity Darwin Lagoon Resort has reached a halfway point.

Extending upon the existing Skycity 5-star property at Mindil Beach, deputy chief minister Lawrie says the construction of the resort will provide new opportunities for Darwin.

“The Skycity Beach Resort is a first for Darwin and the Northern Territory. It will provide an welcome standard of luxury accommodation in the Top End which is usually associated with high-end Asian destinations,” she said.

The SKYCITY Entertainment Group’s CEO, Nigel Morrison was also on-site for an update on construction.

“We are very excited about our new development in Darwin – we believe in the great potential of Darwin and the NT.

“Enhancing the quality of our property in Darwin with its amazing dry season climate, will allow us to seriously compete with the best properties in Australia and Asia for the higher end tourist market.

“Additionally there is great potential for Skycity to market Darwin as a VIP international resort destination to Asian and Chinese high rollers. The
quality of this property and the facilities it offers will allow us to more seriously approach this market.

“With the bridge across the central lagoon now in place, we are an important step closer to delivering this landmark development to the Northern Territory,” said Morrison.

Announced in May, the new addition is built around a tropical lagoon swimming pool and will feature 2 super villas, as well as 32 luxury guestrooms, some offering a swim-up, swim-out experience. The resort will also include a swim up bar, in addition to an all day dining restaurant, terrace bar and lavish day spa.
