Transport and Tourism Forum calls Comedy Festival serious business
[Mon 13/06/2011 07:49:32]
The announcement that the Sydney Opera House will host the Just for Laughs comedy festival for three years is great news for the tourism industry, according to peak national body, Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).
“The Just for Laughs comedy festival is a real drawcard and will bring people to Sydney from across Australia and overseas,” said chief executive John Lee.
“Just for Laughs is an internationally known brand and its reputation means Sydney will be treated to a star-studded line-up over four days in September.
“This is a real coup for the Sydney Opera House and further adds to its burgeoning repertoire as an entertainment venue with something for everyone.
“It’s also great to hear that the event has been secured for three years and that there are plans to expand it each year. We look forward to the Just for Laughs comedy festival becoming a permanent fixture on Sydney’s events calendar and to the increased tourism activity that will bring.”
Lee said events give people a reason to plan a trip to Sydney.
“Events like this are often the catalyst for travel and help to create demand at what would otherwise be a relatively quiet time of year,” he said.
“They bring flow-on benefits to the Sydney economy, for accommodation providers, retailers, restaurants and other attractions. This activity creates employment, as well as adding another layer to Sydney’s social and cultural fabric.”
