Adelaide gears up for festival season kick off

[Thu 03/03/2011 08:49:53]

March is an action-packed month of events including the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Australian Rowing Championships, Australia's leading world music festival 'WOMADelaide', the Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup and the adrenalin-charged motor sport racing at Clipsal 500 Adelaide all kicking off for South Australia.

"This month's events calendar reinforces South Australia's reputation as the festival State," said Events South Australia, general manager, Hitaf Rasheed.

"March offers a brilliant blend of sporting, arts and cultural festivals and events, making it an ideal time to visit South Australia," Rasheed said.

The Adelaide Fringe continues into March offering a diverse range of acts including; cabaret, theatre, comedy, dance, circus, music, puppetry, visual arts and prose with the fringe concluding on Sunday 13 March.

The Adelaide Fringe, one of South Australia's signature arts events is one of many festivals happening this month in Adelaide

The Australian Rowing Championships will be held from Monday 7 March, with more than 25,000 people expected to watch the championships at the upgraded AM Ramsay Course in West Lakes, about 30 minutes from the Adelaide CBD.

"This is the first time in 12 years Adelaide has hosted the championships and they are expected to be a key stepping stone for Australia's Olympic rowing hopefuls, with Australian rowing selectors for the 2012 Olympic Games, expected to be out in force," Rasheed said.

More than 2,000 athletes will take part in the 7-day event, so don't miss this fantastic opportunity to watch Australia's top rowers go head to head before the Olympic Games," she added.

For the more musically inclined, head to Adelaide's Botanic Park from 11-14 March for WOMADelaide. A true celebration of music, arts and dance from around the world, the event draws tens of thousands of people through the gates each year.

"Botanic Park will be transformed into a world music mecca with 60 international artists from 32 countries participating in this wonder event," said Rasheed.

On Monday 14 March, the Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup will take place, launching an exceptional day of great carnival atmosphere and style - making it an event not to be missed.

And for those who are after some adrenalin-charged action, the Clipsal 500 Adelaide will roar into town from 17-20 March.

Each year, the country's largest domestic motor sport event attracts hundreds of thousands of patrons.

"Hosting these events not only raises our State's international profile as a tourism destination, but injects many millions of tourism dollars into South Australia's economy."
