Business Events Cairns and Great Barrier Reef report venues undamaged

[Thu 10/02/2011 09:23:17]

Business Events Cairns and Great Barrier Reef have reported that venues in Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas have sustained little or no damage as a result of Cyclone Yasi which crossed the coast 200km south of Cairns on 3 February.

All venues in these regions have comprehensive cyclone management plans and as a result were able to remain operational throughout this period. This includes The Cairns Convention Centre, hotels, off-site venues and tour operators.

The resort area of Mission Beach, 200km south of Cairns, which was impacted severely, will take some time to recover, however, the tourism burea has reported that regular updates will be made regarding the progress.

As of this week, the bureau has reported The Great Barrier Reef sustaining minimal localised damage and day tours to the reef have resumed operation on Saturday 5 February. Additonally, all accommodation in Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas is operating as normal as is the Cairns International Airport.

The region, which has experienced a 42% increase in business events over the past six months, has reported very few cancellations as a result of the cyclone. The bureau has reported Forward bookings indicate the growth to continue and we looking forward to welcoming our conference and incentive delegates over the coming months.
