Queensland Tourism Minister urges Aussies to holiday up north

Queensland’s Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor is urging Australians to attend the Capricorn Coast's annual 'Great Australia Day Beach Party' to help the local economy get back on track following recent floods.

Lawlor, who will himself attend the event alongside thousands of other visitors, said the beach party was the third biggest Australia Day party in Queensland.
“We want to see people visit the Capricorn area and show their support for the local community who have been doing it tough in recent weeks,” he said.
“If Australians want to help Queensland recover, one of the best things they can do is take a holiday here - this will help the local economy get back on track.
“Having a great turn-out for this year's Australia Day event on the Capricorn Coast will provide a massive boost for the local community and is a great way to celebrate what Australia Day is all about.”
The Great Australia Day Beach Party will be held from 8am to 8pm at Main Beach Yeppoon, and will feature a range of activities throughout the day including markets, performances, fun competitions and fireworks.
Capricorn Tourism and Economic Development CEO Mary Carroll said while most local tourism operators were getting back on their feet and ready to welcome visitors, there was a common misconception domestically and internationally that the Capricorn Coast was closed to tourists.
“The tourism operators of the Capricorn Coast and Rockhampton have suffered very little, if any, 'physical' damage from the recent floods; the irony is that we enjoyed perfect summer weather whilst the access into Rockhampton was cut,” Carroll said.
“This time of year is perfect for a beach getaway, and we are encouraging domestic and international visitors to plan the Christmas or New Year break they missed out on in the region.
“With the Australia Day just around the corner we are urging locals and all Queenslanders alike to jump in the car, kick up their heels and prepare for a great holiday on the Capricorn Coast,” she said.
