InterContinental Hotels takes action for Responsible Business Day

[Tue 28/09/2010 09:19:49]

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts worldwide celebrated Responsible Business Day last Tuesday, (21 Sept) with all properties taking part in a responsible business initiative contributing to the conservation and sustainability of the communities in which they reside.

An initiative of IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group), Responsible Business Day was inspired by the hotel group’s ongoing global partnership with National Geographic’s Centre for Sustainable Destinations.

At InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto hotel staff spent the day handing out over 100 native Australian seedlings to passers-by on Collins Street, in celebration of their new partnership with Parks Victoria’s Plant-A-Tree program. The partnership will allow staff and guest to contribute to the preservation of Australia’s diverse flora and fauna by offsetting their carbon footprint or planting trees in one of Melbourne’s many parks.

On Collins Street, InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto staff (John Ryan, director of sales & marketing and Lauren Mantyvirta, conference and events executive) hand out native Australian seedlings.

Meanwhile, InterContinental Sydney staff rolled up their sleeves for a working bee at St Canice Kitchen. Staff spent the day repairing furniture and equipment and giving the kitchen a much needed clean and paint. St Canice, in the heart of Potts Point, operates a daily soup kitchen which relies on volunteers to feed around 1000 people a week. InterContinental Sydney’s partnership with St Canice will continue through its new meetings packages, offering delegates the opportunity to contribute to this important community service.
