Social media boosting event business

Industry suppliers and trade events are quickly jumping onto the social media bandwagon as an essential means of connecting with their clients, exhibitors and guests.
Staging Rentals & Construction Services – a leading supplier of staging, drapes and event construction services to the meeting and business event sector – is embracing social media as a way to connect with their clients and colleagues.
Launching their Facebook page last week, Staging Rentals represents a rise in the business use of the social media platform in the event industry, which has been previously seen as an ‘out of work’ space.
However as Meri Took, director Staging Rentals sees it, business has always been about people doing business with whom they like.
‘I view the new social media platforms as a way of connecting with people we are working with in a more interactive and less formal way. It is just an extension of how we like to do business – by getting to know the people we work with - this always delivered the best results,’ says Took.
The tradeshows to the industry, RSVP Melbourne and RSVP Sydney, have also launched their Facebook pages. Event director Delwin Kriel says it makes sense for them because they are a leading conduit between all facets of the industry.

‘This year, we have a new vision - inviting people to ‘join the ultimate event community’. The social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are the perfect way to get members of the industry talking, finding out about each other and their products and in due course write business,’ says Kriel.
Businesses are also able to carve out a niche for themselves using social media, as Tom Rutherford, creative director, fnb has discovered.
‘When I decided to return to the event industry with a different service offering, I embraced the social media platforms as they allow me to communicate my new message – and talk about my new business model,’ says Rutherford.
