AIME 2010: Singapore announces transformation program

[Thu 04/03/2010 10:41:20]

By James Wells in Melbourne

Singapore Tourism has announced a new program of ‘transformation’ throughout 2010 with a series of new conferencing and tourism facilities which will continue to evolve into 2011.

According to the Singapore Tourism Board regional director, Mr Chooi Yee-Choong, key to Singapore’s transformation in 2010 is the opening of the two eagerly anticipated integrated resorts (IRs) – Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) and Marina Bay Sands (MBS) – which will dramatically enhance Singapore’s landscape. The IRs are expected to contribute more than SGD 12 billion of investment to Singapore’s tourism sector and enhance Singapore’s reputation as a “must-visit” destination for leisure and business visitors.

They will raise the bar on dining, entertainment, attractions and venue options and standards, and augment existing offerings such as the breathtaking Singapore Flyer, the glamorous Formula One night race and a host of fresh restaurants, nightspots and spectacular shopping malls nestled alongside old favourites.

An International Cruise Terminal and the first phase of the 101-hectare open-space ‘Gardens by the Bay’ project opening in 2011, as well as the redevelopment of Fullerton Bay and Clifford Pier to enhance the waterfront precinct.

The return of key business events including World Cities Summit (28 – 30 June), Singapore International Water Week (28 June – 2 July), and the SingTel Singapore F1 Grand Prix (24 – 26 September) are expected to enhance Singapore’s already strong line up of meetings, conferences and events in 2010 and beyond.

Another major highlight in 2010 is Singapore’s hosting of the inaugural Singapore Youth Olympic Games from 14 to 26 August. The event is expected to attract over 3,600 young athletes, 800 officials and 500,000 spectators, and will demonstrate Singapore’s ability to host mega international events.
