Extravagance All-Round At Star City's Sports Theatre Opening

[Thu 17/09/2009 01:05:35]

By James Wilkinson

Star City’s main gaming floor was the hottest ticket in Sydney last night (Sep 16) as the casino unveiled its new $13.5 million Sports Theatre and Bar.

Star City's new Sports Theatre and Halo Bar

The Sports Theatre and Bar, the second stage in Star City’s $475 million redevelopment, was officially opened to much fanfare last night with an event that included the roll-up of Australia’s biggest sports stars and a special performance from rockers Eskimo Joe.

Guest sipped on Moet & Chandon champagne and a selection of premium beers and luxury cocktails, ate food selected by star chef Sean Connolly and mingled with the likes of Wendell Sailor, Lote Tuqiri, Stirling Mortlock (all footballers) and 20/20 cricket star David Warner.

Star City managing director Craig Garvin said the title ‘theatre’ comes from the 12 metre-wide mega screen and the 225 tiered, stadium-style seats.

“Sports Theatre is unlike any other venue in Australia,” he said. “Featuring sporting events from around the world, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, Sports Theatre promises to be a hub for sporting enthusiasts.”

At the heart of the venue is the Halo Bar, Australia’s longest with a circumference of 46.5 metres. With 30 kinds of bourbon and 15 beers on tap, it promises to be a mecca for sporting enthusiasts in Sydney.

On top of the theatre, the venue also features 47 50-inch LCD screens, meaning sport is available to watch in any corner of the bar; plus Australia’s first paperless TAB; and its own restaurant Fuel, which is open to 2am on weekends.

While its name may suggest the venue is not just about sport, with the Theatre set to host some big name bands, including Evermore on September 23 - for free.
