Superliner Makes Sydney Home

[Thu 30/10/2008 03:22:04]

By Jill Varley

The Dawn Princess — a 77,000-tonne superliner that last week become the largest ship to sail under the Harbour Bridge — is expected to impact significantly on the $330-million industry as it makes Sydney its home port.

The Princess Dawn, now based in Sydney, offers a
unique
proposition for incentive planners

Sneaking under the Harbour Bridge with just 2.5m to clear, Dawn Princess arrived in Sydney on Friday (October 24) before setting sail on her maiden 28-night circumnavigation tour of Australia, departing with a full complement of passengers, including a number of high-profile corporate clients.

“The current state of the world economy and the all inclusiveness of cruising makes cruising an attractive holiday or reward option,” a spokesperson for the superliner said, adding that the vessel has been tailored to suit Australian tastes, with onboard currency in Australian dollars.

Bigger than Cunard Line’s QE2 (70,300 tonnes), the Dawn Princess is equivalent in size to 68 Manly ferries, 137 A380 super-jumbos or 706 blue whales. If tipped on her stern, she would stretch 11 meters higher than the observation deck of Sydney Tower.

The Dawn Princess has 999 staterooms, a four-storey atrium, eight restaurants, seven lounges and bars, a state-of-the-art theatre, spa and fitness centre, four pools and five whirlpool spas. She can carry up to 1998 passengers and is served by a maximum of 845 staff.
